Idioms in Daily Life

Reading Worksheet — Elementary (C) | tahricteaches.com

Do you know what an idiom is? An idiom is a special kind of phrase. The words in an idiom do not mean what they say. For example, “it is raining cats and dogs” does not mean cats and dogs fall from the sky. It means it is raining very hard outside!

Idioms are very common in the English language. You can hear them at school, at home, and at work. Many people use idioms every day without thinking about it. When you learn idioms, you can understand people better and have more fun with English!

Sometimes idioms can be confusing at first. If someone says “break a leg” before a test, they are not talking about your leg! They are saying “good luck.” This is a very popular idiom. Students often hear it before a big game or a school play.

Another popular idiom is “piece of cake.” This does not mean real cake! It means something is very easy to do. If your friend says “the homework was a piece of cake,” they mean it was very easy. Can you think of something that is a piece of cake for you?

Learning the arti of idioms takes a little time. But it is not too hard. Try to learn one new idiom every week. Soon, you will know many English idioms and you can use them too!
