英文冠詞完整指南: a, an, the 用法全解 | English Articles (2026)
Chinese has no articles. That’s not a learning gap — it’s a structural difference. In Mandarin, 「我吃飯」 works the same whether you ate lunch in general or ate that specific lunch. English forces a choice every single time a noun appears: a, an, 這, or nothing. Getting this right separates near-fluent speakers from truly fluent ones, and it shows up on every TOEIC and GEPT test. A 2019 National Taiwan Normal University study of university English essays found article errors were the single most frequent grammatical mistake, averaging once per three sentences.

英文冠詞是台灣學生最常犯錯的文法點之一,也是 TOEIC / GEPT 高頻考點。
英文冠詞是什麼?[What Are English Articles?]
Articles are a small set of words — a, an, , 和 這 — placed before nouns to signal how specific the noun is. They act as a reference system, telling the listener whether something is new, already known, or being spoken about in general. English has two categories:
- Indefinite articles: a 和 an — used with nouns that are new, unknown, or one of many
- Definite article: 這 — used when both speaker and listener have the same specific thing in mind
The third option is the zero article — no article at all — which applies when you speak about things in general. Chinese speakers often insert a 或者 這 where no article belongs, or drop one where it is required. Both errors are equally common, and both make English sound foreign. This guide addresses both.

每個英文名詞前都需要決定:用 a、用 an、用 the,還是不用冠詞?
a 與 an 的差別 [When to Use ‘a’ vs ‘an’]
The rule is phonetic, not spelling-based. Use an before any word that starts with a vowel sound. Use a before consonant sounds. The first letter on the page is irrelevant — what matters is the sound that comes out of your mouth when you say the word aloud.
The four exceptions that trip up even advanced learners:
- an hour — the ‘h’ is silent, so the word opens with the vowel sound /aʊ/
- a university — starts with ‘u’ but sounds like /juː/, a consonant ‘y’ sound
- an MBA — the letter ‘M’ is pronounced “em,” which begins with a vowel sound
- a one-way street — “one” starts with the /w/ consonant sound, not a vowel

a / an 的選擇取決於「發音」,不是拼字。
Use a 或者 an in these situations:
- First mention of a countable singular noun: I watched a film last night.
- One of many — any example of the type: She wants to become a nurse.
- Definitions and classifications: A penguin is a bird that cannot fly.
- Frequency expressions: twice a week, $15 a kilo
什麼時候用 the?[When to Use ‘the’]
Use 這 when both speaker and listener already know exactly which thing is meant. Four situations reliably call for 這.
1. Second mention — you introduced it first with a, now you refer back with 這:
I bought a laptop yesterday. 這 laptop came with free software.
2. Unique — only one exists in the relevant context:
這 sun rises at 6 AM today. Please call 這 manager.
3. Shared context makes it specific — no introduction needed:
Could you close 這 window? (We are in the same room — you already know which window.)
4. Superlatives and ranking:
這是 這 best coffee shop in Taipei.

用 the 的核心邏輯:說話雙方都知道指的是「哪一個」。
One pattern Taiwan learners consistently miss: geographical names follow their own system. Use 這 with rivers, oceans, mountain ranges, and country groups — the Nile, the Pacific, the Alps, the United States, the Philippines. But single mountains, countries, and cities take zero article — Mount Everest, Taiwan, Taipei, Japan. Taiwan itself is never “the Taiwan.”
零冠詞:哪些情況完全不需要冠詞?[Zero Article: When No Article Is Needed]
This is where Chinese speakers struggle most. The instinct is to add an article to every noun. English uses no article in these key situations.
Plural nouns making general statements:
The dogs are loyal animals.← Wrong (refers to specific dogs only)
Dogs are loyal animals. ✓ (all dogs, everywhere, always)
Uncountable nouns in general statements:
水 is essential for life. / I love music. / Patience is a virtue.
Meals, sports, and academic subjects:
We have lunch at noon. / She plays basketball. / He studied economics at NTU.
Functional use of places:
She’s in hospital. (She’s a patient.) / He’s at work. / The children are at school.
Compare: She went to 這 hospital to visit her friend. (Visitor, not a patient — a specific location.)

零冠詞規則:複數泛稱、不可數泛稱、專有名詞,以及部分固定表達。
台灣學生最常犯的 5 個冠詞錯誤 [5 Most Common Article Mistakes Taiwan Learners Make]
These five errors appear on every TOEIC Part 5 answer sheet and in most Taiwanese professional emails. Fixing them raises your written English score immediately.
Error 1: Adding 這 to general plural statements
The people in Taiwan are very friendly.(Unless you mean a specific group already mentioned.)
✓ People in Taiwan are very friendly.
Error 2: Dropping the article before a singular countable noun
She is doctor.
✓ She is a doctor.
Error 3: Using a/an with uncountable nouns
I need an information about this product.
✓ I need information / some information about this product. (Information is uncountable in English — no a, no plural.)
Error 4: Adding 這 before country or city names
I was born in the Taiwan.
✓ I was born in Taiwan.
Error 5: Dropping 這 before specific, known references in business writing
Please send report to director by Friday.
✓ Please send the report to the director by Friday.
Error 5 is the most damaging in professional contexts. When both writer and reader know exactly which report and which director, 這 is required. Dropping it makes formal emails sound unpolished and signals non-native writing to any native speaker reading the message.

商業英文中的冠詞 [Articles in Business English]
Article errors in professional writing are more visible than in conversation because they appear in writing, where readers slow down and notice. Three patterns come up constantly in business emails and reports.
First, company names and product names never take an article: I work at TSMC, not I work at the TSMC. The exception: company names that already include 這 in their official branding (rare in Taiwan).
Second, job titles used with a person’s name take zero article: Director Chen approved the budget. But job titles used alone take 這 或者 a depending on context: a director was hired (new hire, one of many) versus the director approved it (the specific director in question).
Third, abstract nouns in business writing can go either way. Innovation drives growth (general truth — zero article). But the innovation introduced in Q3 exceeded targets (specific innovation — use 這). The test: if you can answer “which one?”, use 這.
冠詞快速決策法 [A Decision Tree for Every Noun]
Memorizing rule lists rarely works under exam or time pressure. This decision tree handles 90% of article decisions in real time:
- Is it a proper noun (person’s name, city, country, brand)? → zero article
- Is it a plural noun making a general statement? → zero article
- Is it an uncountable noun in a general sense? → zero article
- Do both you and your reader know exactly which specific thing you mean? → 這
- Is it singular, countable, and the first mention? → a / an
The remaining 10% involves fixed idiomatic expressions — in the morning, by the way, on the other hand — which are best learned as vocabulary chunks, not grammar rules. Build your list as you encounter them in reading.
For TOEIC Part 5 and Part 6 specifically, the questions almost always provide context clues: “the following,” “as mentioned in the previous paragraph,” or a noun already introduced earlier in the passage. The test rewards readers who scan the surrounding text first, not those who guess from the blank alone. One rule that holds in over 99% of cases: if you see a superlative (best, worst, most, least, first, last, only), the answer is 這 — superlatives imply there is only one.

用「決策樹」方法做冠詞選擇,比死記規則更快更準,尤其在 TOEIC 考試中。
