Lunar New Year Traditions

Reading Worksheet — Elementary (C) | tahricteaches.com

Lunar New Year is a big celebration in many parts of Asia. It happens in late January or early February. Families come together to eat, talk, and share happy moments. The holiday lasts for about 15 days. It is the most important time of the year for many people.

Before the new year, families clean their homes. They believe that cleaning sweeps away bad luck. They also hang red decorations on doors and windows. Red is a lucky color. It is thought to bring good luck and keep bad spirits away.

On New Year’s Eve, families share a big dinner. They eat traditional foods like dumplings, fish, and rice cakes. Each food has a special meaning. For example, fish means good luck and more money in the new year. Children love this meal because it tastes so good.

Children also receive red envelopes with money inside. Adults give these envelopes to wish them health and happiness. The money is a small gift that shows love and care. Kids feel very excited when they open them.

At night, people watch loud and colorful fireworks in the sky. There are also dragon and lion dances on the streets. These dances are fun to watch. Lunar New Year is a time of joy, family, and hope for a great year ahead.
