English resume on laptop for Taiwan job applicants

Writing English resume sections 履歷英文結構 step by step

履歷英文不是中翻英,而是重新組織經歷給 ATS 與招募主管看。

CV vs Resume vs

Here is the quick rule for Taiwan job seekers in 2026. If the company is headquartered in the United States, send a Resume. If the company is headquartered in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, or anywhere in continental Europe, send a CV. If you are applying to a Taiwan-based subsidiary of a foreign company, follow whatever word the job description uses, because the local HR team has been trained on that exact term. The document itself stays largely the same — the section headers change slightly, and the academic detail expands when you are writing a true CV for research roles.

履歷英文 8 大必備區塊(English Resume Structure)

一份能過 ATS、能讓招募主管讀完的英文履歷,幾乎都有相同的 8 個區塊:Contact Info、Professional Summary、Work Experience、Education、Skills、Certifications、Projects、Awards。順序可調整(沒有經驗的新鮮人可以把 Education 拉前面),但缺一個就會被認為「準備不充分」。下面逐一拆解。

Section 1: Contact Information | 個人資料

這一段最容易出包的不是英文,是「放了不該放的東西」。台灣履歷習慣放證件照、生日、性別、婚姻狀況——英文履歷 全部不要。美國 EEOC 反歧視法規讓招募方明確避開這些資訊,你放上去反而會讓 HR 把你的履歷直接刪除以避嫌。

該放的內容:

  • 姓名(中文名建議拼音 + 西式 First/Last,例如 Wei-Lin Chen,而不是只寫 Chen Wei Lin)
  • 城市與國家(例如 Taipei, Taiwan)——不用寫完整地址
  • 專業 email(用你的姓名,不是 cuteboy1234@yahoo.com.tw)
  • 電話(含國碼 +886)
  • LinkedIn URL(客製化網址,例如 linkedin.com/in/weilin-chen)
  • GitHub 或作品集網址(工程、設計類必備)

One small detail that trips up almost every Taiwan applicant: the way you write your name. English-speaking recruiters expect First Name first, Last Name second. If you have a Chinese given name like 偉廷, write it as Wei-Ting (hyphenated) — not WeiTing, not Wei Ting with a space, not WEITING in caps. The hyphen is the standard form recognized by the U.S. State Department romanization tables used on passports. Then when a hiring manager reads it out loud during a phone screen, they say it correctly the first time. Small win, but you start the call on a good note rather than spending the first thirty seconds correcting pronunciation.

One more thing: keep the file out of services that block external viewers. Do not link to a personal Dropbox folder, a Google Drive that requires sign-in, or a Notion page that asks for permission. Half the time the recruiter cannot open it, and they move on. Either attach a PDF or link to a public portfolio site.

Section 2: Professional Summary |

Backend engineer with 6 years of experience building scalable APIs handling 50M+ requests daily. Cut infrastructure costs at a Taiwan fintech by 38% by migrating monolith services to AWS Lambda. Looking to bring distributed systems expertise to a product-focused team building consumer fintech.

三句話分別交代:身份 + 數字、最強成果 + 量化、想去什麼樣的公司。如果你的 Summary 裡沒有任何數字,重寫。

The reason this format works on a Taiwan-to-foreign-company application is that recruiters in the United States and Europe expect a Summary to compress your entire pitch into about thirty seconds of reading. They are not interested in your career story arc or your reason for moving from Taipei to Seattle — they want to know if you can do the job. Open the Summary with your title and years of experience, follow with your single most impressive measurable result, and close with the kind of role or company you want next. Treat it as the bait, not the meal.

Customize the Summary for every job, not the rest of the resume. The Summary is the only section you should rewrite for each application. Pull two or three keywords from the job description and weave them into your three sentences. The rest of the resume stays the same. Five minutes of Summary editing gives you a higher hit rate than rewriting the whole document.

Section 3: Work Experience | 工作經歷——用對動詞才會被讀完

Work experience 工作經歷 履歷英文 action verbs interview

用 “Spearheaded” 而不是 “Responsible for”,就讓你贏過 70% 的台灣英文履歷。

招募主管平均花 7.4 秒掃過一份履歷(這是 The Ladders 2018 年眼動追蹤研究的數字,至今仍是業界引用標準)。工作經歷區塊是這 7.4 秒裡他們眼睛停留最久的地方——所以每個動詞都要拼。

把所有 “Responsible for…”, “Helped to…”, “Worked on…” 通通刪掉。換成 Action Verb:

  • 領導類:Spearheaded, Orchestrated, Directed, Pioneered
  • 建造類:Architected, Engineered, Implemented, Deployed
  • 改善類:Optimized, Accelerated, Refactored, Reduced
  • 達成類:Achieved, Delivered, Surpassed, Generated
  • 分析類:Analyzed, Audited, Benchmarked, Diagnosed

每一條 bullet 的結構:Action Verb + 做了什麼 + 量化結果。例如:

❌ “Responsible for managing social media accounts.”
✅ “Grew Instagram following from 8K to 47K in 11 months, generating NT$2.3M in attributed sales.”

量化什麼?金額、百分比、人數、時間。如果真的沒有數字,至少寫頻率(daily, weekly)或規模(across 12 markets)。

The deeper point is that English resume bullets are read like newspaper headlines. The recruiter scans the first three words of each line. If the first three words are an action verb, a noun, and a number, they keep reading. If the first three words are “Was in charge”, “Was responsible”, or “Helped the team”, they jump to the next role. Front-load every bullet. The rest of the line is for the people who decided you were worth a closer look.

Aim for three to five bullets per role. One bullet looks lazy. Eight bullets means you wrote everything you ever did and could not edit it down. Pick the four strongest outcomes — the ones a future manager would care about — and cut the rest. A short resume that lists only your best work is more impressive than a long one that lists everything.

Also pay attention to tense. The current role uses present tense verbs (lead, build, manage) because you still do those things. Past roles use past tense verbs (led, built, managed) because they are finished. Mixing the two in a single resume signals carelessness, and the hiring team treats it as a small but real warning sign. Run a quick search for any verb that ends in “ing” — those usually need to go.

Section 4: Education | 教育背景——台灣大學的官方英文名稱

Education 教育背景 履歷英文 Taiwan university official name 大學名稱

台灣大學的英文要用官方名稱,不要自己翻譯。

把學校翻錯名字會被招募主管 Google 出來,看起來像造假。每間台灣大學都有官方英文名稱,請使用以下版本:

  • 國立台灣大學:National Taiwan University (NTU)—不是 Taiwan University
  • 國立成功大學:National Cheng Kung University (NCKU)
  • 國立清華大學:National Tsing Hua University (NTHU)
  • 國立交通大學(已併入陽明交大):National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU)
  • 國立政治大學:National Chengchi University (NCCU)
  • 輔仁大學:Fu Jen Catholic University
  • 淡江大學:Tamkang University

學位寫法:Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science,不是 “Computer Science Bachelor”。畢業日期用 “May 2024” 或 “2020–2024″。GPA 通常台灣是 4.3 制——換算成 4.0 制再寫上去,或者註明 (Scale: 4.3)。GPA 低於 3.5 就不要寫。

If you studied abroad for one semester or one year, list it as a separate sub-entry under Education with the exchange program name, the host university, and the dates. International experience is genuinely valuable to foreign companies, and most Taiwan students undersell theirs. Even one semester at a recognized U.S. or European university tells a hiring manager that you can function in an English-speaking academic environment, which is a useful proxy for being able to function in an English-speaking workplace.

Honors and Latin distinctions are worth listing if you have them. Summa cum laude, magna cum laude, cum laude, Dean’s List, and President’s List all translate cleanly. So do Phi Beta Kappa equivalents and faculty-nominated awards. If you did a Capstone project, name it in one line with the topic and the grade or recognition received. Skip clubs unless you were the president, captain, or founder. A line that says “Member, Photography Club” tells a recruiter nothing; a line that says “Founder & President, NTU AI Club (grew membership from 12 to 240 in two years)” tells them you have leadership instincts and the ability to recruit people.

Section 5: Skills | 專業技能——ATS 看的就是這一段

Skills 專業技能 履歷英文 ATS keywords technology developer

The mistake most Taiwan applicants make in this section is listing soft skills next to hard skills. A line that reads “Python, React, Communication, Teamwork, Leadership” looks unfocused, and the ATS does not care about soft skill keywords. Move soft skills out of the Skills block entirely — they belong inside your work experience bullets, where you can show them in action. “Communication” on its own means nothing; “Presented quarterly results to a 40-person product organization” shows you can actually communicate.

Group your hard skills into categories. Three or four categories with a few items each reads far better than a single 30-item list. A clean version looks like this: Languages: Python, Go, TypeScript. Frameworks: React, Next.js, FastAPI. Infrastructure: AWS (Lambda, ECS, RDS), Docker, Terraform. Data: PostgreSQL, Redis, BigQuery. A recruiter who reads four lines can immediately tell what you do. A recruiter who has to scan thirty items in a row gives up halfway.

One small format rule: include the year you earned the certification, and the expiration date if there is one. AWS certifications expire in three years; Scrum Master certifications need renewal every two. If a certificate has expired, leave it off entirely or note “Renewing 2026” if you actually plan to do so. A lapsed credential listed without a date implies you have not kept your skills current — a small signal that becomes a larger one when stacked with other small signals.

If you have a niche cert that is highly relevant to the role — say, Salesforce Marketing Cloud Administrator for a CRM marketing job — promote it. Move it from the Certifications block up into the Summary. The general AWS or Google credentials can stay in the Certifications section, but the one credential that maps directly to the job deserves top billing. The hiring manager should see it in the first ten seconds, not the last.

Section 7: Projects |

TaipeiBus API — Open-source REST API aggregating real-time bus arrival data across 7 Taiwan cities. github.com/wlchen/taipeibus

  • Architected Go backend with Redis caching, serving 200K daily requests at p99 < 80ms.
  • Reached 1.4K GitHub stars, integrated into 3 commercial mobile apps.

Section 8: Awards & Activities | 獎項與課外活動

最後一段保持選擇性。只放和應徵職位相關的獎項:黑客松前三名、論文得獎、業界比賽、社團領導角色(社長、學生會幹部)。高中校隊、家政課第一名這類資訊全部刪掉。如果你是新鮮人,志工經驗可以放——但要寫出實際影響(”Tutored 24 elementary students; 18 advanced one English level.”)。

The Awards section earns its place when it adds a piece of evidence the rest of the resume cannot. A Forbes 30 Under 30 listing, an industry conference speaking slot, a Y Combinator batch, a published research paper in a peer-reviewed journal — these earn the inches they take up. A high school speech contest from eight years ago does not. The test is simple: would a hiring manager reading this line think more highly of you than they did before? If yes, keep it. If no, cut it.

Volunteer work follows the same test. A monthly visit to an animal shelter does not belong on a resume aimed at a senior engineering role. But a weekly tutoring commitment that ran for three years and produced documented results does, because it demonstrates long-term reliability and the ability to teach — two qualities that map directly to senior workplace expectations. Frame volunteer entries the same way you frame paid work: with action verbs, durations, and measurable outcomes.

9 Common Mistakes Taiwan Candidates Make on English Resumes | 履歷英文最常見的錯誤

Common English resume mistakes 履歷英文錯誤 Taiwan candidates

先做三個檢查:第一,存成 PDF(不要 .docx,會跑版)。第二,命名格式 FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf,不是 my_resume_final_v3_real.pdf。第三,把 PDF 丟進 jobscan.co 或類似 ATS 模擬器,看分數有沒有 70+。低於 70 就回頭調 Skills 區塊的關鍵字。

履歷只是門票,真正的測試在面試。把履歷搞定後,下一步是練英文面試的 15 個必考問題,以及1 分鐘英文自我介紹腳本。這三個放在一起,外商工作的門檻其實沒有想像中那麼遠。
